History of the
fund “YESOD”

How did the name come about

The name of the JCC in Saint - Petersburg is not chosen by chance: on one hand, the word «YESOD» in Hebrew means «basis», on the other hand, YESOD can be deciphered as an abbreviation: Jewish Saint-Petersburg Community House.

YESOD is based on national traditions, culture and values. Since 2006 we have been working to share these values with everyone who comes to us.

Masha Aryeva,
CEO of the fund
“YESOD”

Masha Aryeva, CEO of the fund “YESOD”, tells about the building, the mission of the community house and her personal history:

What is YESOD?

YESOD is based on the model of similar centers in other countries. They are called JCC (Jewish Community Centre), their mission is to promote Jewish culture and heritage through festive events, Jewish programs and informal education. They are open for every interested visitor.

There are many such centres around the world, ranging from high-rise big buildings to very small ones in smaller towns. They began to appear in the early 20th century - Jews felt the need for some «third place», besides home and work, where they could feel comfortable and safe among their like-minded.

What’s the idea?

The concept of such center is that every Jew can come and give something to this place and get. The important part is that you can not only receive, but also give, share something and be useful.

Our JCC is a place where any Jewish family, regardless of their status, condition, age can find something interesting and useful for themselves: help (for low-income families and the elderly), education - formal and informal (school, kindergartens, camps, youth programs), student society; cultural, concert and lecture events.

October 2, 2002

Construction works of our building on Bolshaya Raznochinnaya street started

The foundation of YESOD was laid by joint efforts of project sponsors - the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee «Joint», «The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany», the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. and city Jewish organizations.

September 9, 2005

YESOD was opened

Our building is full of references to Jewish culture and unusual architectural solutions. The color of the facade is an allusion to the Jerusalem Wall, the glass ceiling in the library resembles menorah, animalistic ornaments in the concert hall refer us to biblical scenes, and also in YESOD, like in other Jewish houses, you can find an unpainted piece of the wall symbolising the destroyed Temple.

2006

Fund YESOD was established

YESOD’s space has become home to many Jewish and non-Jewish organizations in the city. The foundation with the same name was opened and settled in the building to make the cultural life of Jewish Petersburg richer and more diverse.

2007

The lecture hall of the Jewish educational center «Eitan» began, concert activities started, the first group of the leadership program «Lehava» took place, 6 studios of the child’s development center «Granatik» were opened

All projects exist till nowadays: in «Granatik» no longer 6 children’s studios, but 30, and «Eitan» grew up to 6 directions - different from each other, but united by the Jewish tradition and informal approach to education.

2008

The Klezmer workshop started to work, «Granatik’s» Playground was opened

Till nowadays YESOD is the only place in Petersburg where you can learn to play music of East-European Jews.

Since then, the geography of our TIULS has expanded annually: Ukraine (Odessa), Greece (Athens), Spain (Barcelona), Georgia (Batumi), Israel (Ashkelon), Greece (Thessaloniki), Lithuania (Trakai) and beloved Pushkinskiye Gory in Russia.

Café in YESOD was opened

It was a difficult task that took 2 years with all the agreements. The Old-Timbers admit that they will never forget the first cup of espresso from a small counter with buns. It is a pleasure to see how it grew in a large cafe where you can feed children and hold a business meeting, and have lunch.

2015

First shifts of Teens’ TIUL

We thought that TIULS doesn’t happen much, and started a camp for teenagers.

2016

Art-project within «Eitan» started

We came up with the meeting once a month in the library to get inspired by the creativity of famous artists, get acquainted with different styles of art and communicate. Later from the classical art-project were born Art-tasting with Nastya Grib and «Recipe of a good evening» with Inna Grushetskaya.

2016

The first group of leadership program for teenagers «Lehava Junior»

For those who have not had enough of TIULS during the holidays, they opened a seven-month leadership program with weekly meetings - on Shabbats, during volunteering, personal growth trainings and lectures about the Jewish tradition.

2022

The Scientific Group started breakfast

Quite by chance, we came up with a way to combine the Jewish tradition, oriental snacks and sci-pop, invited the anthropologist Drabyshevsky with a story about evolution, and started a new project.

2023

The alumni club of «Lehava Junior» program opened

When there were 6 groups of active graduates, who did not want to leave YESOD, It had no choice but to start a project with weekly meetings of friends - on Shabbats, with table games in our library, picnics, volunteer actions and seminars.
